Hot Springs to Custer 17th August 2013

Wind Cave State Park & The Crazy Horse Memorial

A short but great drive from Hot Springs to Custer via Wind Cave SP this morning.
Apparently there are around 450 Bison in the Herd at this State Park and I think all of them were on the road when we went through this morning.  It was a little bit scary but amazing at the same time.  They are huge magnificent beasts that charge across the road at lightening speed. I would hate to be on a motorcycle that gets in their way!

After the huge Bison we came across these cute little Prairie Dogs.  There are hundreds of them popping up out of their burrows making little yipping sounds, loved it!

In the same paddock was this beautiful Antelope just having a rest.  What a way to start the day!

Once we had settled into our hotel we still had time to make it out to the Crazy Horse Museum.  We thought it would only take 15 minutes at the most to have a look at the mountain sculpture but we ended up spending at least 2 hours at the centre.  It was really interesting and well worth the visit.  The sculpture was started in 1948 and is still no where near finished.  The original sculptor has passed away and his family has taken over.  In keeping with his original plan they have refused to be state or federally funded so they can do it the way they and the Native Americans want it.

Sitting Bulls 7 x Grandson.

A great day followed by a nice evening walk down the streets of Custer and a great meal.

And just to finish Maurice's day off completely this Model A Roadster was sitting out front of the restaurant.
